Drywall finishing for new walls, basements, remodels and patches around Grand Junction: taping, mudding and sanding until walls are smooth and ready for paint.

The basics
Drywall finishing is everything that happens after the sheets are hung: taping the seams, covering screws and corner bead with joint compound, applying thin coats and sanding between them until the wall looks like one smooth surface.
It's what separates a wall that looks finished from one where every seam shows through the paint. Good finishing takes patience, because each coat needs to dry before the next one goes on.
Finish levels
Drywall finishing is often described in levels. The level a wall needs depends on where it is and how it will be painted.
Seams and fasteners get a second coat of compound, a common base for walls that will be textured.
Another coat over seams and screws for walls getting flat or eggshell paint in typical lighting.
A thin skim coat over the whole surface for glossy paint or walls hit by strong side light.
Where it's needed
Any project that adds or opens up walls needs finishing before paint. Common examples:
In each case, the new drywall has to blend with the walls around it, especially where new meets old. Matching the finish level and any existing texture keeps the seam between them from showing once the room is painted.
Patches
A patch that's flat and smooth to the touch can still show through paint if it isn't feathered out and blended into the wall around it. The compound needs to extend past the repair in thin coats, and if the wall has a texture like orange peel or knockdown, the texture has to be recreated so the patch doesn't stand out.
One team
Because Service Wizards also handles residential painting and commercial painting, the same company that finishes your drywall can prime and paint it. That means one estimate, one schedule and no waiting between trades.
Freshly finished drywall also needs the right primer before paint. Joint compound and the drywall's paper face absorb paint differently, and skipping primer can leave seams that show through as dull or shiny stripes, a problem called flashing. Priming first gives the color an even base.

Questions
More answers about drywall finishing for homes and businesses around Grand Junction.
It depends on the product, the thickness of each coat and the humidity. Premixed compound dries as water evaporates, while setting type compound hardens through a chemical reaction. Grand Junction's dry air usually helps, but each coat still needs to dry fully before sanding.
